Fiber Test & Measurement Technician

Department: Dark Fiber Services
Location: Mobile, AL

The Fiber Test and Measurement Technician’s role is to perform fiber characterization on all field fiber to ensure such meets the requirements of our customers.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Perform fiber characterization tests (Uni-directional & Bi-directional OTDR, LOSS, CD/PMD).
  • Interpret/analyze all test data obtained in the field to identify issues and collaborate with other team members and/or departments for resolution.
  • Compile test data, upload results real-time and generate reports using Fast Reporter and/or TRM.
  • Perform in-field fusion splicing of cable and connectors.
  • Create and follow Methods of Procedure (MOP’s) as required.
  • Support other test technicians in the field with real-time analysis and guidance.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education and/or Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Proficient with Google Earth.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, maps, as-builts, etc.
  • In depth knowledge and understanding of optical fiber type/core (SMF, MMF).
  • Knowledge of optical fiber standards (TIA/EIA).
  • Proficient in the operation of test equipment including but not limited to OTDR, OLTS, Power Meter, VFL and Scope.
  • Strong knowledge of cloud-based database (Salesforce, Dropbox, SharePoint).
  • Strong knowledge of vendor cloud-based software platforms (Test Flow, AEROS, etc.).
  • Proficient with the use of computers and associated software (MS Office Excel/Word, Outlook, Visio, Adobe).
  • Willingness to travel throughout network footprint (>50%) and often on short notice.
  • Familiar with optical transmission bands (O-Band, C-Band, L-Band) and the associated wavelengths.
  • Thorough understanding of Insertion Loss and ORL.
  • Understanding of Wave Division Multiplexing (CWDM, DWDM).
  • Understanding dispersion and how it affects the signal transmission across fiber.
  • Ability to test and troubleshoot fiber plants utilizing CWDM/DWDM technology.
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team-oriented, collaborative environment.

  • Sitting, standing, and walking.
  • Lifting up to 50 pounds several times a day.
  • Overhead lifting of over 20 pounds.
  • Bending, stooping, climbing ladders and crawling.
  • Keyboarding/typing.
  • Long hours involving overtime and weekends as necessary.
  • Ability to read effectively from a computer screen, sampling device and/or a paper copy.
